The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Best of Manhattan Awards Committee have announced the 2021 winners of the Bob Meistrell Local Legend Award and the first Hall of Fame Award: Jon and Nicole Hirshberg; and Michael Greenberg, respectively.

Bob Meistrell Local Legend Award

The Bob Meistrell Local Legend award was created in memory of Body Glove Co-Founder Bob Meistrell. The award recognizes an individual for a lifetime of work to improve the community of Manhattan Beach through their professional, volunteer, philanthropic, and civic roles.

Awardees Jon and Nicole Hirshberg live in Manhattan Beach with their four children. Jon, a business leader and philanthropist, is CEO and president of license firm ENI-JR286, which specializes in sporting goods accessories. He owns and operates JR Technologies, which acts as an angel investment firm that is dedicated to providing funds for entrepreneurial companies.

After he lost his father, Ron Hirshberg, in 1997 to pancreatic cancer, he co-founded the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer. To date, the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer has raised over $125+ million for pancreatic cancer research. Hirshberg also co-founded the Tour de Pier event in Manhattan Beach to benefit cancer research by taking indoor spinning to the great outdoors. After only seven years, the event has raised over $6 million, including more than $1.5 million in a single day, and is now expanding across the country.

MBCC Hall of Fame

The MBCC Hall of Fame was established in 2021 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce. Those inducted are recognized as individuals that have demonstrated exemplary leadership and service to the Chamber of Commerce and local business community including a distinguished career of accomplishments, innovation, successes, and extraordinary acts of kindness in which the impacts are widespread. Inductees into the Hall of Fame are also considered honorary members of the chamber for life. The first recipient receiving the Chamber Hall of Fame award is Michael Greenberg.

Greenberg is co-founder and president of Skechers. He has played a vital role in expanding Skechers from a niche product into a $5.2 billion-plus award-winning and diversified global lifestyle and performance brand, including 3,300+ retail locations around the world. Founded in Manhattan Beach, Skechers employs more than 1,000 employees in the city. In late 2020, Greenberg started the Skechers Family Foundation Save Our Restaurants campaign that ultimately distributed over $700,000 in grants to restaurants in Manhattan Beach.

Greenberg also devotes his time to a variety of charitable endeavors that express his commitment to improving the lives of children. His focus has helped elevate philanthropy at Skechers through the Skechers Foundation, and the annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, which has raised over $13 million for children with special needs and education since its inception in 2009. Beyond Skechers, Greenberg also helped establish and is on the board of the California South Bay Chapter of The Friendship Circle, a non-profit mentor organization now known as the Friendship Foundation, and he led the restoration of the Roundhouse Aquarium at the end of Manhattan Beach Pier in honor of his son, Harrison Greenberg. Through the Harrison Greenberg Foundation, more than $4.5 million was raised to rebuild the iconic aquarium, which serves as an oceanic education center for school children across Southern California.

The Hirshbergs, Greenberg, and the award finalists in other categories will be recognized at the Best of Manhattan Awards on Thursday, October 21 from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the westdrift hotel. Winners of the other award categories will be announced live at the show.
