The Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair's storage unit was recently burglarized, and most of the fair's Community Showcase memorabilia was stolen.

Fair organizers are now asking community members for donations of memorabilia to help the group rebuild its collection.

According to Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair President Joe Marcy, while many items stolen were replaceable, the "most devastating loss" was the memorabilia from the past 48 years.

"We had a large collection of mugs, shirts, and banners. Local artists provided unique designs over the years," Marcy told DigMB. "Loyal fairgoers have been gracious to offer a shirt or mug here and there [since the theft], but we’re going to need more to rebuild our collection in preparation for our 50th anniversary next year."

The group is seeking fair mugs, posters, t-shirts from all years, hats, and anything else to help the fair restock its Community Showcase displays.

Community Showcase is an integral part of the fair, featuring the city-wide art contest and performances as well as a walk down "memory lane" viewing the t-shirts, mugs, and posters.

If you can help by donating memorabilia, please email [email protected] or DM the Hometown Fair on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mbhometownfair/.

Theft Remains Unsolved

The fair's storage unit is located in Redondo Beach, near Inglewood and Manhattan Beach Boulevard.

Marcy said that the theft from the storage unit remains under investigation.

"We’re told that theft has become more rampant at storage facilities," said Marcy. "We’ve had some attempts in the past; however this is the first time burglars have been successful. Unfortunately, camera footage was not helpful in the investigation and the case remains open. The police department and facility management have been supportive during this challenging time."

The Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is a non-profit venture produced by an all-volunteer board. It has run annually since 1972, although the 2020 Hometown Fair was held virtually

The fair seeks to promote local artists and organizations through craft booths, food and game booths, and a variety of entertainment for children and adults. For many local non-profits, the fair booths are the largest fundraiser of the year.
