Manhattan Beach Vaccinations: Teens Getting their Shot

May 22, 2021 03:43PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Manhattan Beach teens have jumped at the opportunity to get the COVID-19 vaccine. As of May 16, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Health, 69 percent of local teenagers ages 16-17 (799 individuals) have received at least their first shot.

Additionally, last week the state opened up eligibility for youth ages 12-15 to receive the vaccine. A Beach Cities Health District clinic at Adventureplex to vaccinate local youth this week vaccinated nearly 750 MBUSD students, according to the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. (There is a lag between when vaccinations are given and when totals are reported by the L.A. County Department of Health, so the numbers and percentages of vaccinated youth ages 12-15 have not yet been officially reported.)

All told, 76% of Manhattan Beach residents ages 16 and over have received at least their first shot. Among senior citizens (ages 65 and over), 98% have received at least their first shot.

Higher Vaccination Rates Lead to More Reopenings

Along with an increasing number of residents getting vaccinated comes a series of reopenings.

Los Angeles County has said that it will align with the state's June 15 plans that ease many capacity limits and distancing requirements, and it will adopt the CDC's masking guidelines for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.

Current county reopening protocols will be amended or retired on June 15 to reflect these changes. Those individuals who are fully vaccinated will no longer need to wear masks in most situations. (There are different requirements, however, for large capacity indoor events.)

Additionally, L.A. County will also follow the state on lifting current travel restrictions on June 15 to align with CDC travel recommendations.

"I can't emphasize enough how the vaccine has allowed us to get to a place where we can safely do the things that we loved to do before the pandemic," said L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer in a statement. "If you have been putting off getting vaccinated, I ask that you not delay any longer and get vaccinated. The COVID-19 infection, hospitalizations and deaths that are still occurring are almost all among people not fully vaccinated. This is preventable."

Those individuals who are not yet vaccinated are asked to wear a mask and maintain 6 feet of distance when around others not in their household, and to consider getting the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.

This weekend at county-run vaccination sites and L.A. City vaccination sites, everyone 18 years and older getting their first COVID-19 vaccine will have a chance to enter the Los Angeles Lakers 2021-22 Season Ticket Vaccination Sweepstakes to win two season tickets for next season.
