May 02, 2021 01:54PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
From schools to scholarships to helping families in need, here's a chance to give a boost to some of your favorite Manhattan Beach causes.

May 12: Harbor Interfaith Services Comedy Night

The South Bay Auxiliary of Harbor Interfaith Services will host a comedy night and live and silent auction on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. The event will be hosted by comedian and author Judy Carter. Event registration is free, but you must register to bid on auction items. The silent auction will begin on May 5, 2021 at HIS2021.givesmart.com.

Harbor Interfaith is the lead agency in the South Bay for addressing homelessness and poverty, both of which have become much worse during the pandemic. The event supports The Children’s Center, one of the key programs at HIS. The Children’s Center relies entirely on private support; it receives no governmental funding. Parents place their children in Harbor Interfaith’s care while they seek employment, find housing, go to college or attend job training.

June 12: Manhattan Wine Auction

Ticket sales are now open for the virtual tastings at the June 12 Manhattan Wine Auction, the popular annual event benefiting the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF in support of Manhattan Beach public schools. (Reservations for the Culinary and Wine Experiences opened up last month.)

The virtual tastings offer a variety of wines, beer, liquor, and cocktails, and range in price from $80 to $475.

The virtual tastings and the Culinary and Wine Experiences will begin at 5:00 p.m. on June 12. The livestream show and paddle raise will begin at 7:00 p.m. that night.

The Manhattan Wine Auction, now in its 27th year, has built its reputation on being the largest charity wine auction in Southern California, offering wine and culinary delights in a festive atmosphere. The silent auction will go online on June 5; and the live auction will go online on June 10.

Sandpipers Spring Donation Campaign

While the Sandpipers' spring fashion show has been a staple on the local benefits circuit for 27 years, this is the second year that the fashion show has not been able to take place in person.

This year, Sandpipers are hosting a Spring Donation Campaign called “Giving is Always in Fashion.” The group is hoping that the "heart and goal" of the fashion show will live on with the Spring Donation Campaign in making a difference for struggling members of the South Bay community. The Sandpipers' cornerstone programs include back-to-school shopping for kids in need, holiday baskets for families in need, emergency casework, and a scholarship program.

Suggested fashion-themed contribution levels - and what they could fund - include:

"Haute Couture" ($1,000+) - Sponsor an entire family with much needed household necessities

"High Fashion" ($500-$999) - Car repairs to get a single mom to work every day

"Glamazon" ($250-$499) - Buy books for a college-bound freshman

"Model of the Moment" ($100-$249) - Replace the washer/dryer in a single dad’s apartment

"Statement Piece" ($50-$99) - Back-to-School clothes for an 8-year-old

"Ready to Wear / Off-the Rack" ($25-$49) - New shoes for the first day of school
