Chuck Johnson and the CJS Quintet

Sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor, Don Knabe

The City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department Cultural Arts Division invites the public to an evening concert featuring Chuck Johnson and the CJS Quintet on Saturday, October 22nd from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Joslyn Community Center located at 1601 North Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266. Admission is free and there is ample street parking on Valley Drive. Chuck is a native of Owensboro, Kentucky, and was surrounded by music early in his life. Originally an Electrical Engineering student, Chuck's initiation to the saxophone occurred at the University of Evansville, and launched what would become not only his primary passion in life, but a flourishing career as well. Chuck Johnson has been busy making a name for himself in Los Angeles with the CJS Quintet, a hard bop group he founded in early 2000, with co-leader and trumpeter James Smith. "CJS Quintet synthesizes the hard bop East Coast aesthetic with their unique West Coast musical experiences to create a distinctive voice: a cohesive and unyielding approach that combines heartfelt tales with passion. These five artists come together to share their joy in performing a melting pot of classic jazz and bringing soul to modern music." - Scott Reese, Shine On Hollywood Magazine For more information, please contact Deborah Hom, Recreation Supervisor - Cultural Arts Division at (310) 802-5443 or via email [email protected].
