For most of her life Emily Martiniuk, had been an entrepreneur and owner of three successful small businesses. Then things started to slide: One of her adult sons died, then the economy crumpled and she became homeless. Her mental health deteriorated and was institutionalized. She now lives in an apartment and is a Notary Public for the state of California.
