Manhattan Beach Water Tower Project Expected To Be Finished By August

Jun 25, 2021 02:56PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
The Manhattan Beach water tower refurbishment project is now in its final stages, with an expected completion date of August.

According to Anastasia Seims, senior civil engineer with the city of Manhattan Beach, the project is anticipated to be complete by the end of August 2021.

Seims told DigMB that the removal of the exterior coating started at the beginning of June 2021 and is currently ongoing. The removal of the exterior coating is anticipated to be completed in one month by early July 2021, and the application of the new exterior coating system is anticipated to take one month after that.

After the coatings are complete, Seims said, the city logo and a new FAA light will be installed and the encapsulation and scaffolding will be removed. Then the tank will be put back into service.

The water tower was built in the 1940s and was structurally anchored and retrofitted in the 1990s. The tower is now mainly used as a backup system and for pressure control and not for storage.

For the past several months, the iconic tower has been encapsulated in a white covering that residents have begun referring to as a "soda can" or "salt shaker."

Peck Reservoir Replacement Project Continues

Meanwhile, over at 18th and Peck, the Peck Reservoir Replacement Project continues. The second largest capital improvement project in recent history, it is designed to replace the city’s largest drinking water storage reservoir with a new 8-million-gallon reservoir. The new concrete reservoir will replace the former one built in 1957 and increase capacity by 500,000 gallons to store drinking water supplies and serve the city in firefighting and during emergencies.

Construction on the Peck Reservoir project (not to be confused with the April Fool's Day volcano) began in October 2020 and is expected to be completed in spring 2022.
