Aspiring Manhattan Beach Eagle Scout Works to Beautify Mira Costa

Dec 08, 2020 08:27AM ● By Jeanne Fratello

Camille Jorenby's project aims to paint the concrete bases of the poles in the Mira Costa High School parking lot. The first round of priming and painting is almost complete.

An aspiring Eagle Scout has a plan to beautify Mira Costa High School's main parking lot - and she's also hoping to be a member of the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts.

Camille Jorenby is a sophomore at Mira Costa who is a scout of BSA (formerly Boy Scouts of America) Girls Troop 860.

She is working on her Eagle Scout project, which is to paint the gray concrete bases of poles in the main parking lot at Mira Costa High School. Jorenby anticipates that the paint will add color to a gray area, inspire school spirit, and be a welcome sight to students when they return from quarantine.

"We have painted the base of 42 concrete pillars yellow, and will later personalize each pillar with green and white symbols, such as the school logo, name, and mascot," said Jorenby. "This will help promote the school and bring color to a place where many students and parents spend time before and after school."

Over the past weekend, she (along with several volunteer helpers) cleaned the pillars, finished priming, and also finished applying the first coat of yellow paint to the pillars.

Jorenby is currently seeking community funding to help purchase tools, supplies, and equipment for this project. She has created a Go Fund Me page and hopes to raise $1,500.

Eagle Scout Certification

Since 1912, the Eagle Scout rank has represented a milestone of accomplishment that is recognized across the country and even the world. Those who have earned the Eagle Scout rank count it among their most treasured achievements.

Part of the process of becoming an Eagle Scout involves planning, developing, and giving leadership to others in a service project that is helpful to a religious institution, school, or the community.

Once Jorenby finishes the project, and the paperwork, she will have a Board of Review interview that she has to pass. She hopes to be certified as an Eagle Scout by late January or early February.

The BSA organization formally began letting girls join as scouts on Feb. 1, 2019. The inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts will be recognized in February 2021.
