The Manhattan Beach Police Department, as well as members
from the Manhattan Beach City Council and Manhattan Beach Human Resources
Department, received a Patriot Award from a Defense Department organization on Thursday.
The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors and
bosses nominated by a Guardsman or Reservist employee for support
provided directly to the nominator. It is given by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program that aims to promote cooperation and understanding between
Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers and to
assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee's
military commitment.
The police and city received the award for their support of Manhattan Beach Community Service Officer Kate Anderson in her
one-year deployment to the Middle East as a Blackhawk Medevac pilot.
"Lt. Andy Harrod from the Manhattan Beach Police and Lisa Jenkins from Human Resources made sure Kate
knew her job would be here upon her return from deployment, that all
of her benefits would remain intact with no penalties, and that she has
the full support of the Police Chief,
City Manager and the council," Manhattan Beach Mayor Richard Montgomery told MB News.
Anderson's platoon leader, Lt. Chavez, introduced the award in a small ceremony outside the Manhattan Beach Police Department.
Anderson then presented an award to Manhattan Beach Police Lieutenant Andy Harrod as the Department of Defense Employee
Support Program honoree; as well as awards to Mayor Richard Montgomery, and City Manager Bruce Moe. Police Chief Derrick Abell received a challenge coin and CSO manager Jess Sandoval and Police Sgt. Brian Klugler received hats and patches.
Noting that the event was held under a perfect, cloudless blue sky, Montgomery said, "It was a very proud and patriotic event."
"This was truly an honor and we appreciate all those who attended to show
their support," wrote the MBPD in a statement on its social media on Thursday.
