May 20, 2020 08:09AM ● By Mb News Staff
Kids, get ready to take a deep dive into the world of oceans. A live book reading from Pages, a Bookstore on May 26 will feature a new book on the ocean as well as a Q-and-A with a scientist from the Roundhouse Aquarium.

The event is the result of a partnership with pages: a bookstore, children’s book author Seth Fishman, and the Oceanographic Teaching Station, Inc.’s Roundhouse Aquarium.

In conjunction with the release of Fishman’s children’s book, “The Ocean In Your Bathtub,” the live event will educate school-aged children about the ocean and its connectivity between humans, and communities.

The live virtual reading program is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.. Students will be able to see Fishman read his book and hear from a Roundhouse scientist.  Both will answer questions live from pages: a bookstore in Manhattan Beach.

Autographed copies of “The Ocean In Your Bathtub," written by Seth Fishman and illustrated by Isabel Greenberg, are available for order at pages.

Event Brings Ocean Science Programming to Kids

The event is a result of the bookstore, the aquarium, and the author partnering together to bring ocean science programming to K-3 students who are at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When the Roundhouse Aquarium temporarily closed its doors in mid-March to ensure everyone’s health and safety, we pivoted our in-person programs to virtual learning tools. Our partnership with {pages} and Seth Fishman allows us to bring rich ocean science programming and positive educational initiatives to students who are now learning from home,” said Grace Adams, executive director of the Oceanographic Teaching Stations, Inc., in a statement.

“We strongly believe in finding ways to inspire reading and literacy in our community," said Linda McLoughlin Figel, owner of pages: a bookstore. "The Roundhouse Aquarium and Seth Fishman are good neighbors and pages is excited to work with local partners, especially during this pandemic. We’re all in this together and this collaboration allows us to offer the community a new dimension to learning science and reading."

Fishman is an L.A.-based author and literary agent who also authored the childrens' book, "A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars." The book "The Ocean in Your Bathtub" was released on May 19. ("Finally, my last name makes sense for a kid born in west Texas," quipped Fishman.)

“When we think of oceans, usually we think of big animals like orcas, but the oceans are so much more," said Fishman. "We are connected to it in so many ways - and how better to teach children about the ocean than to have this partnership with pages and the Roundhouse Aquarium. What binds us together is a common desire to teach children and adults about our profound connection to one another and the big wide ocean."
