Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent Mike Matthews announced on March 23 that MBUSD schools would close and offer remote instruction until May 5, in response to the emerging COVID-19 coronavirus situation.

"The Los Angeles County Office of Education has recommended that all county public schools remain closed with staff returning on May 4 and students returning to school on Tuesday, May 5, 2020," wrote Matthews in an email to parents. "MBUSD will comply to help contain the spread of COVID-19."

During this time, teachers will provide instruction remotely (via email, Google classroom, canvas, video conferencing, or other electronic platforms). School employees have been preparing for this situation for several weeks.

Matthews added that the governor has publicly stated that there is a very good chance that students will not return to school this year.

Reflecting the current adjustments, state testing (CAASPP) for grades 3-8 and 11, as well as all other state assessments, have been cancelled for this year.

Additionally, Advanced Placement testing is being drastically revised so that students may take exams at home. Students should contact their Advanced Placement teacher to learn more details.

All activities, events, and athletics will be cancelled, and there will be no practices, meets, games, or any public gatherings held on campus.

As of Monday, March 30, all school fields and the Waller Field track have been closed.

Students and parents will be receiving instructions from their respective teachers and schools. A list of resources for parents is available on the MBUSD website.

Matthews also emphasized that the situation continues to be fluid.
