Costa Girls' Soccer Seizes First CIF Crown

Mar 01, 2020 09:15AM ● By Mb News Staff
You can't say the girls of Mira Costa soccer don't know about winning.

Most of the team's 10 seniors played in the local AYSO league and won back-to-back state championships in 2014-15. Just last year, they torched opponents and reached the CIF final for Division 2, although they finished as runners-up.

Now you can say the Mustangs are CIF Champs, for the first time in school history.

On Saturday, Mira Costa beat Oak Hills convincingly, 5-1, taking home the CIF crown for the Southern Section Division 2.

It's a spectacular way for coach Patty Perkinson to celebrate her 31st year as the Mira Costa coach. (Adam Pomfreit and Amanda Cross, who also played under Perkinson previously, are assistant coaches.)

One of the team captains,
Ashley Stepczyk, scored for Mira Costa against Oak Hills, joined by Ellie Wessingerberg, Grace Watkins, and Sierra Sargent.

Despite having the game played on a neutral field, Warren High School in Downey, Costa saw an enthusiastic, record crowd show up to cheer on the team.

And it's not over. State regionals begin March 3-7, and Costa has already qualified for the tourney. What more can these Mustangs achieve together?

Among the team's seniors (pictured below), four are slated to play with NCAA Division 1 colleges.

Team captains for Costa, besides Stepczyk, are
Kiki Sussman, Ashley Naylor and Emilee Ray.
