Spend Your Ski Week in Manhattan Beach

Feb 15, 2020 12:38PM ● By Jeanne Fratello

Art by Wendy Stillman currently on display at "Mare Vitalis" at the Manhattan Beach Art Center

When the Manhattan Beach Unified School District shuts down for Ski Week (February 15-23), it may seem like everyone has left town. But if you're here at the beach, remember that there's plenty to do. (And you'll most likely avoid the crowds).

Send the Kids to Ski Week Camps

All week long, the Manhattan Beach Department of Parks and Recreation runs ski week camps for kids. The REC Camp offers activities from relay races to food art. The Teen Center Camp will feature everything from a handball tournament to a movie day. And don't forget the Teen Center's annual Snowboard and Ski Trip to Snow Summit on Saturday, February 22.

Kids ages 4 to 12 can also check out Adventureplex Camp, which includes arts and crafts, music appreciation, age-appropriate physical skill-building activities and social developmental activities, such as cooperative and imaginative games at AdventurePlex.

Have an aspiring volleyball player? The Mira Costa Boys' Volleyball Team will host a co-ed volleyball camp on Feb. 19 and 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All levels welcome; ages 9 to 14. Click here for details.

Try Your Hand At Crafts

Want to give kids something new to try? Pottery Barn Kids at the Manhattan Village Mall, along with Rooted Harmony, is hosting a Succulent Workshop for gardeners of all ages on Saturday, February 15. There are three one-hour sessions starting at noon, 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 and up and include the cost of all equipment plus succulents. (Five percent of the admissions cost will be donated to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital.)

See Some Art

If you haven't seen Mare Vitalis yet, now is your chance. This exhibition at the Manhattan Beach Art Center focuses on the importance of the ocean in maritime communities, featuring the work of three painters: Alex Weinstein, Wendy Stillman, and Marlene Sanaye Yamada. Their work spans from abstract to representational, and the idea of ocean is represented through specific cultural references, philosophical theories about nature and beauty, and the physicality and motion of water. Open Wednesdays, Friday, and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Listen to Live Music

If you're looking for great live music, you'll find it all over Manhattan Beach:
  • Gelson's Market has live music at 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays (Jodi Siegel on Feb. 15 and Sam Woodbury on Feb. 22.)
  • MBWineCO will feature Latch Key Kid Acoustic on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m.; and The Benefits on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Hennessey's Tavern will feature Tommy Peacock on Friday, Sat., and Sun. Feb. 21-23 at 9:00 p.m.; and The Thrills Band on Sat. Feb 22 at 10:00 p.m.¬†

Enjoy "Yin and Wine"

Experience a "Yin and Wine" class: Try a 75 minute deep stretch (Yin) class with free wine at Yoga MB (formerly The Green Yogi) on Friday, February 21 at 6:00 p.m. Please arrive at 5:45 PM to enjoy wine before class. Wine will be served before, during, and after class. Feel free to bring your wine into the studio for class with you. All class packages and memberships can be used for this event, and the wine is included. (This class happens on the third Friday of every month.)

Help Marine Mammals

On Saturday, February 22, a fundraiser at a Manhattan Beach home will benefit marine mammals. For a $50 ticket, enjoy an evening of chef-driven cuisine, signature cocktails, beer & wine, musical entertainment, and a silent auction at a luxurious Manhattan Beach estate home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to the Marine Mammal Care Center to help save marine mammals in the South Bay. Tickets for this "Save The Ocean Puppies" event are available at Eventbrite.
