Time to Get Ready for Junior Guards

Jan 17, 2020 09:24AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Junior Guards season is just around the corner...and now's your chance to help your kids get in shape, while supporting local athletic programs.

Enrollment is now open for the Mira Costa High School Aquatics program's annual Junior Lifeguard Conditioning Program.

The program is designed to refine basic skills, condition, and improve swimming times. It aims to help Junior Guard hopefuls get ready to take the JG entry test, and help returning Junior Guards get in swimming shape.

All classes are taught by Mira Costa High School Aquatics athletes under the supervision of Coach Jon Reichardt. All proceeds from the program benefit the Mira Costa Aquatics programs (swimming, diving, and water polo).

"It's great to have the younger kids working with the older athletes," said Susan Rossow, president of the Mira Costa Swim and Dive Booster Club.  "Then when they get to Junior Guards, they have a chance to see some familiar faces...and the older kids are rooting for them every step of the way."

There are three sessions of the conditioning program:
Session 1: February 24-March 12 (3 weeks, 9 classes); M/W/Th, 5:00-6:00 p.m. - $180.
Session 2: March 16-April 3 (3 weeks, 8 classes); M/W/Th (no class 3/18), 5:00-6:00 p.m. - $160
Session 3: April 20-April 29 (2 weeks, 5 classes); M/W/Th (no class 4/30), 5:00-6:00 p.m. - $100

Enrollment is now open, and spaces are limited. They are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment for Session 1 closes on February 22; Session 2 closes on March 14; Session 3 closes on April 18. (See the main enrollment page here.)

All participants must be at least 9 years old by July 1, 2020, and are expected to have mastered basic swimming skills.

The L.A. County Junior Lifeguard Program is offered to all children in Los Angeles County.  This summer program is designed to instruct youth (ages 9 through 17) in beach and ocean skills.  The program provides instruction in water safety, swimming, body surfing, surfing, physical conditioning, competition skills, first aid, lifesaving, rescue techniques, CPR and the use of professional lifesaving equipment.

The swim test dates for Junior Guards are tentatively scheduled for April 4, April 18, and May 3.
