Costa Water Polo Heads to CIF Semi Final

Nov 10, 2019 10:06AM ● By Mb News Staff
The Mira Costa High School Boy’s Water Polo team hosted a home playoff game Saturday, Nov. 9, and made it count.

The Mustangs took on the third-ranked Woodbridge High School Warriors in a CIF Southern Section Quarter Final game. Costa had earned the second-round playoff slot with an 11-10 win a few days before over Damien High School.

The first quarter was a defensive battle, with Woodbridge scoring the only goal. Early in the second quarter, Collin Tournat would find the net, tying the score.

In what would be a back-and-forth scoring game throughout, there was never more than a two point differential for either team.

Tournat put the second Mira Costa score on the board in the second quarter, only to have Woodbridge counter with a go-ahead score. Jake Carter tied the game at 3 apiece. After another Woodbridge goal, Costa was down 3-4 at the half.

Carter tied the game again in the third, and Abi Anorve put the Mustangs up by one. Going in the fourth period, Woodbridge took the lead again. Kai Scarlett brought the score to a 6-6 tie amid increasingly loud chants by the crowd of "Let's Go Costa!"

Two more goals by Carter in the last period put Costa up 8-6. (See our video below for one of those goals.) The team and the crowd were feeling it.

As the game clock began to run out, Woodbridge needed a quick score and called time. Upon gathering their offense, the Warriors scored in a flash, making it 8-7 with just under 40 seconds to go in regulation. Costa would have to keep the ball away from Woodbridge and drain the clock, using all of their 30-second shot clock time to pinch their opponents' chances for one last shot.

A Woodbridge defender got too aggressive trying to get the ball back for his team, resulting in an ejection, a new shot clock for Costa, and effectively the end of the game.

The final score was 8-7, with Mira Costa now moving on to the CIF Semi Finals Wednesday night at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. The Mustangs will face the second-ranked San Clemente High School Tritons.

Last year, Costa went all the way to the CIF Finals, but lost in the Final to Foothill High School.
