It's another great summer weekend in Manhattan Beach, and this time it's beach volleyball - and other beachside fun - that will dominate the scene.

This weekend's AVP Manhattan Beach Open tournament is the longest running continuous event in the sport, and is widely considered the "Wimbledon of beach volleyball." The tournament, which started as an amateur event and is now part of the professional volleyball players tour, is now in its 60th year. Worth noting: Manhattan Beach Open is the only professional volleyball tournament in which amateurs are able to "place into" the event through pre-qualifying rounds.

The tournament takes place in the large stadium just south of the Manhattan Beach Pier. If you want to be a spectator for any of the volleyball events, tickets will be available on-site based on availability at the AVP box office.

Events for the weekend include:

Thursday, August 15:

8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.: AVP Manhattan Beach Open qualification rounds will be going on all day on Thursday.

4:00 p.m. The annual Walk of Fame Pier Ceremony that honors the winners of the previous year's Manhattan Beach Open will take place on the Manhattan Beach Pier. Plaques will be enshrined on the pier to commemorate the 2018 winners (Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena; April Ross and Alix Klineman).

5:00 p.m.: The annual Sunset Beach Party will take place at the AVP stadium's Sky Deck. Tickets range from $55 to $120 for this popular party.

Friday, August 16:

6:30 a.m. Start your morning with yoga on the beach: Chevy Laurent of Tune it Up! will offer a yoga session at the Sky Deck of the AVP stadium. The class is free, but registration is required.

9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.: AVP Manhattan Beach Open main draw tournament opening rounds will be going on all day Friday at the AVP stadium.

5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.: If you're looking for something a little different, check out the Tennis Ball Golf Championship at Westdrift Hotel. Westdrift's new Short Course features six expertly routed golf holes with oversized cups to be played with tennis balls. This free event is an 18-hole stroke-play championship with age divisions: 7-9, 10-12, teens, and 21+.

6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Movie night on the beach returns, once again sponsored by Nikau Kai. This year's movie will be The Incredibles II. There will be a raffle around 6:15 and then the main feature will begin on the Jumbotron at the AVP stadium at 6:30. Bring beach chairs and blankets. Concessions will be available for sale (benefiting the Mira Costa Surf Team.)

Saturday, August 17:

9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.: AVP Manhattan Beach Open main draw tournament elimination rounds will be going on all day Saturday at the AVP stadium.

Sunday, August 18:

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.: AVP Manhattan Beach Open main draw tournament final rounds will be going on all day Sunday at the AVP stadium. The finals will take place at 2:00 and 3:30 p.m.

9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.: The popular Kids Extreme competition sponsored by the Manhattan Beach Department of Parks and Recreation returns to Begg Field and Begg Pool. Kids from ages 4 through 14 will swim, run, and go through an obstacle course. Every participant gets a medal. Registration is $40 for residents; $45 for non-residents; and $50 for morning-of registration starting at 7:30 a.m.

3:30 p.m to 7:00 p.m.: Close out another great summer weekend with a concert in the park at Polliwog Park. This week's concert features local youth band Behind Schedule at 3:30 and California's number-one classic rock dance band Platinum Rockstars at 5:00 p.m. Bring a beach chair, a blanket, and a picnic to this free event.
