Mira Costa High School's Senior Recognition Night was an evening of honors, recognition, and hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of scholarships.

At Monday's event, school and community groups from around the South Bay gathered to celebrate high-achieving seniors. All told, more than 200 scholarships were awarded. 

Scholarship award amounts ranged from $500 to a $180,000 ROTC scholarship (awarded to senior Jarem Cortez). The 2019 National Merit Scholarship winners (representing the top 0.5 percent of PSAT test-takers in the country) were Ethan Park and Olivia Tuffli.

Among the new awards this year were scholarships honoring the late Tim Cooper, the beloved Mira Costa athletic trainer who passed away last year. 

West Coast Sports Medicine presented the Tim Cooper Memorial Scholarship to senior Taiana Fonua. Additionally, the Sandacre Teacher Memorial Scholarship Fund created three Tim Cooper Memorial Scholarships, which were awarded to seniors Diego Almendariz, Jamie Lee, and Koda Thormosdsgaard.

Senior speakers included Renee Boettner, Nia Marshall, and Bryce Verket.
