Pacific Parents Snag Soccer Trophy

May 13, 2019 09:01PM ● By Mb News Staff
The 13th annual Jeff Goodrich Parents' Soccer Classic wrapped up Saturday after hard-fought battles, and a little fun.

A new "recreational" third bracket allowed parent players who were out for a good time, but didn't need to push the limits, to come play an afternoon of soccer without the competitive stakes.

It was another expansion of the popular tournament, which featured multiple sponsors, a taco truck and an estimated $55,000 raised for the MB/X Foundation, earmarked for athletic programs within the Manhattan and Hermosa Beach School Districts. More than 120 players participated.

On the pitch, the action was serious yet again.

After pool play, four teams made the semifinals: last year's winners, Meadows; a combined team of MBMS/Mira Costa parents; Robinson; and Pacific

The final came down to Robinson, still looking for its first tournament victory after previous visits to the championship game, versus Pacific, with the Panther parents looking to make their school the first 4-time winners of the tournament.

It was Pacific in the end, after a 2-0 final over the Riptides.

Pacific teams had dominated from 2011 to 2013, with three straight tournament wins. Grand View won in 2008 and in 2015-16, to tie with Pacific for three titles. Meadows' victory in 2018 made the school the tourney's third 3-time winner. Pacific now stands alone as a four-time victor.

"The quality of play on the field keeps getting better every year," said tournament organizer Corey Baim. He extended thanks to the MB/X Foundation for their support and for all of their contributions to athletics and academics in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.

Sponsors this year included Sand & Surf Soccer Club, which has partnered with the tournament for the past 2 years; Legends, which produced tourney T-shirts; OXIGEN water; Barsha Wines and Spirits, Laney LA, Nixon Peabody, Monkish Brewing Co., Select Physical Therapy, Soylent, The Promotions Dept., Wells Fargo Advisors, Belkin, GROW, Grunions Sports Bar & Grill, and the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group. Tacos were served by Villegas Tacos.
