Fast times and family fun made for a memorable morning at the 6th annual running of the Roundhouse Aquarium Teaching Center 5K Fun Run on May 12.

Gray skies and cool temperatures didn't slow down the top runners, which included male winner Thomas Velvin, with a time of 19:14, and female winner Julia Vazquez who finished in 22:46.

A total of 116 registered participants were cheered on at the beach location by family, friends, Roundhouse board members, staff and volunteers. Pre- and post-race fun included a DJ, a refreshment booth, a Roundhouse touch tank, and sponsor West Basin Municipal Water District’s information booth.

Proceeds from the Fun Run benefited the Roundhouse Aquarium Teaching Center’s ocean education programs and operations, which aim to educate and inspire the community  about the ocean, the creatures living in it, and the environment. The temporary Roundhouse facility is located at the South end of the beach near the Manhattan Beach Pier and is open to the public. Summer hours are from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Fun Run sponsors included Gold Level sponsors JHM Foundation and Skechers; Silver Level sponsors Continental Development Corporation and Forbes Corrales Coastal Properties; and
Bronze Level sponsors Anderson Penna, Bayview Pediatric Dental Group, Gelson’s, Regatta Capital Group, West Basin Municipal Water District, and the Zuker Family.
