Thanks to quick action by firefighters, a small fire on the Manhattan Beach Preschool campus on Thursday morning was rapidly contained.

The fire was reported at about 8:00 a.m. in one of the portable classrooms on the preschool campus that is being rented by a private school. That school is on winter recess and no students or staff members were present at the time of the fire.

Firefighters from the Manhattan Beach Fire Department, as well as their counterparts from El Segundo and Los Angeles County, were able to extinguish the fire and contain the scene quickly.

Although there were no injuries, some students at the preschool (who were still in session on Thursday) were relocated or sent home due to smoke in the air, and some students were asked to delay their arrival at school. The preschool was back to regular operations by 9:00 a.m.

"We are grateful that no one was hurt during this incident," said Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent Mike Matthews in a statement. "The district thanks MBFD, LAFD, ESFD, our preschool staff, and our maintenance and operations staff for their quick and effective response."

Although the fire was extinguished quickly, there was extensive damage to the classroom, as well as damage to three adjoining classrooms. The district is still examining these rooms to determine whether they can be repaired and re-occupied.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
