New Ziip Shuttle to Debut During TEDx Manhattan Beach

Nov 02, 2017 11:07PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Looking for a new way to "zip" around town? The new Ziip shuttle will give a sneak preview of its services on Saturday, giving rides to and from the TEDx Manhattan Beach event at Mira Costa High School.

The Ziip shuttle service, developed by a local family, is expected to launch officially early 2018. It is designed to transport students to Manhattan Beach MIddle School and Mira Costa, as well as other destinations in town, using certified and insured drivers in vans that seat 10 to 14 people.

On Saturday, TEDx participants will be able to test the service for free by "Ziipping" to and from Mira Costa. Rides will start at 7:45am and run from 27th Street all along Valley Drive, up to Gould Ave. and across Sepulveda to Mira Costa. Returns from Mira Costa will start at 2:45pm.

To try out the service, click here to register, check routes, schedules and reserve your complimentary rides. You can also request future routes by clicking on “Request a Route” link on the main page.

The service was developed by the Pepemehmetoglu family, who have children at three different Manhattan Beach schools.

According to Geraldine Pepemehmetoglu, the idea for the Ziip shuttle came about exactly one year ago, during conversations with friends after the TEDx Manhattan Beach event.

"We were talking about new ideas and creating dynamic solutions, and the idea came up: 'Why don't we have a shuttle bus running back and forth to take kids to schools here in Manhattan Beach?' One year later, here we are," Pepemehmetoglu said.

Once the service is fully launched, the shuttle will work like an Uber with an app and a website. Parents will be able to reserve, modify reservations and pay using a web app (a phone app will be released shortly), and see their children's route and pickup/arrival.
