The Mira Costa High School Drama/Tech Department is rounding out its busy fall season with a production of the compelling drama The Diviners, to run from November 3 through November 11.

The Diviners, by Jim Leonard, Jr., is set in the fictional town of Zion during the Great Depression. A widowed farmer is raising his son Buddy, whose brain was damaged at age 4 during a near drowning in which his mother died trying to save him. The childlike and uncontrollable Buddy has a sweet spirit but is terrified of water, though ironically he has developed an uncanny ability to find water for his drought-besieged farm community. When a disillusioned former preacher named C.C. Showers comes to town, a unique bond develops between the troubled but gifted Buddy and the man who represents salvation to the beleaguered townspeople. C.C. devotes himself to helping Buddy, and his efforts precipitate a startling chain of events.

The show's director Cary Jordahl said that the content matter, which he describes as an "American Gothic prairie melodrama," requires the young actors to tackle tough subjects. "We want to really challenge the kids to accept the conditions of these characters," he said. "You can memorize the show movement-wise and line-wise, but what we're really trying to do is help them talk about the situation and the obstacles and the goals for each character."

"They're really stepping up to the challenge," added Jordahl, who is also executive director of Mira Costa's drama/tech department.

The Diviners performances will run at the Mira Costa High School New Theater on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m.; Thurs., Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Due to limited seating in the theater, tickets will be sold for specific dates and times. Pre-sale tickets (available until 3:00 p.m. on the day of the performance) are $12 for adults and $10 for students/seniors ($1 additional for online orders). Tickets purchased at the box office are $15 for adults, $12 for students/seniors. Visit Mira Costa Drama/Tech Boosters for more information and online orders.

The Mira Costa drama/tech department has begun performing two shows in the fall in an effort to give more students a chance to be involved in the popular productions. The Diviners follows a successful run of Twelve Angry Jurors last month.
