The Bard is coming to The Beach - meaning Shakespeare, of course - as Shakespeare by the Sea brings its annual free summer shows to Polliwog Park this weekend.

The company will perform "Macbeth" on Friday, August 11; and "The Taming of the Shrew" on Saturday, August 12. Both performances begin at 7:00 p.m.

Shakespeare by the Sea is a nonprofit organization that was launched in 1998 to enrich the lives of individuals, youth and their families in diverse communities through live Shakespeare performances. Since its inception, the organization has become an integral part of summer theater life in South Bay communities.

The performances, to be held in the Polliwog Park amphitheater, are open seating and free to the public. Audience members are encouraged to bring a picnic, low back beach chairs and blankets. There are no dogs, barbecues or wheeled vehicles allowed in the performance area.

The shows are said to cost a total of $14,186 for both performances. The company has reached 59 percent of its fundraising goal as of August 8. Donations are welcome online or at the performance.

The company is also offering a "Golden Ticket" for $150 which is good for reserved special seating for six at the performance of your choice.

The Shakespeare By the Sea performances have been a popular Manhattan Beach attraction for the last several summers.
