Gather up your shovels, your buckets, and your most creative friends and family members, because it's time for the annual Sand Castle Design Contest.
The 57th annual contest, to be held south of the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday, August 6, is part of the International Surf Festival. The contest is sponsored by the City of Manhattan Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, with prizes donated by DigMB.
Registration for the contest begins at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, followed by a briefing on rules at 7:20 a.m. Teams and individuals will build from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. For the next half-hour, there will be pictures and judging, with winners and prizes announced at 10:00 a.m.
For individual builders, the age categories are Youth (age 12 and under) and Teen and Adult (ages 13+). For the group competition, groups may register in the Open Division (all ages) or Youth Division (2 or more team members ages 5 to 12).
Projects can range from dribbles to castles to sculptures. Contestants can use buckets, cans, or shovels to mold sand, and environmentally safe objects such as shells, feathers, and pebbles or rocks to decorate their creations. No glass or bottles will be allowed.
This year's prizes include gift certificates to Wahoo's Fish Taco, Becker's Bakery, and Manhattan Beach Creamery.
