Here's your chance to help a child - and enjoy a day at the beach: The P.S. I Love You Foundation is hosting its 17th annual "Day At The Beach: Adopt a Child For One Day" event on Saturday, July 29 at 8th Street in Manhattan Beach.

The event brings together 300 adult volunteer "mentors" with 300 at-risk youth from local shelters, schools, and the Department of Child and Family Services for a day of fun at the beach.

The children - many of whom live just a few miles from the ocean but have never seen it - are treated to a day of fun, food, games, and a chance to splash and learn new skills in the ocean. The children receive t-shirts, boogie boards, backpacks with school items, food, drinks, toys and games, as well as access to chair massages, face painting, surf lessons, make-up lessons, and relay races.

The day lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mentors can register for a cost of $35; additional donations are also welcome.

The P.S. I Love You Foundation was founded by Patricia Scelza-Jones in 1998, inspired by her compassion and empathy to make a difference in the lives of others in need. The foundation develops and implements social and emotional learning programs for at risk youth from elementary to high school.

The foundation's goal is "to create positive and personal differences in the lives of at-risk children so they can achieve productive lives, live with healthy habits, and maintain peaceful attitudes toward themselves and others."
