Donate Shoes at Yorktown and Tabula Rasa This Weekend

Jul 14, 2017 04:27PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Clean out your closets for a great cause this weekend - and enjoy savings on your downtown shopping at Yorktown and Tabula Rasa.

The two stores are helping local Grades of Green Youth Corps member Sam Holtze with his goal to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes by the time he leaves for college in the fall. He has collected 18,000 pairs in the last six years, and has 7,000 more to go. This summer, he has partnered with the Manhattan Beach Farmers Market and Grades of Green to complete his goal; Yorktown and Tabula Rasa have jumped in to support the cause this weekend.

If you bring in one pair of shoes, you will get 5 percent off your purchase (of regularly priced merchandise) at Yorktown or Tabula Rasa. For two pairs, 10 percent; for three pairs, 15 percent; for four pairs, 20 percent; and for five pairs, get a free "Poo Pourri Shoe Odor Eliminator."

Donation bins will also be available at the Tuesday afternoon Manhattan Beach Farmers' Market all summer long. Donors are asked to rubber-band all pairs of shoes together so the shoes stay together.

Sam Holze was one of the original Grades of Green Youth Corps members when he joined in 2010. If he completes his goal to round up 25,000 pairs of shoes, he will earn a trip to Africa to visit those who have benefited from his collection.

Soles4Souls is an organization that aims to bring donated shoes to those in third world countries who do not have any footwear, and simultaneously promote "green" living by diverting those shoes from landfills. According to Soles4Souls, more than 300 million children in the world can’t afford shoes, yet millions of shoes are dumped into landfills each year.
