Run the 'Best Beach Race on the West Coast'

Jun 20, 2017 10:27AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Whether you're looking for a speedy 5K, a good-natured challenge with friends, or a morning of family fun, the June 24 Manhattan Beach 5K is a run that's sure to fit the bill. Register now to see why the race, which takes advantage of the lowest tides of the year on the flat wet sand, has been called "The Best Beach Race on the West Coast."

Saturday's 5K begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier, continues on the sand to 45th Street in Manhattan Beach, and then turns around and finishes at the pier. The miles are marked with splits and "kick" markers from 400 meters to guarantee your best finish. Additionally, the low tide creates a perfect running surface of hard packed sand like a dirt road so running with or without shoes is an option (the faster athletes tend to wear shoes) or even track spikes. Baby joggers are also welcome.

After the 5K (open to all ages), kids also have the option to run in the 1K Kids Dash at 8:20 a.m. (age 7-12); the Little Kids 400 meter race at 8:25 a.m. (age 3-6); or the Crawlers 50 meter race at 8:25 a.m. (ages 2 and under).

The top five race finishers will receive the World Famous Cookie Medals. Top finishers in each of 28 age divisions will receive cool awards and will have a chance to stand on the podium for a photo op. (Kids' age groups include 2 and under, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12.)

Online registration ($35 for the 5K; $25 for kids' races) is available through Wednesday. Late registration ($40 for the 5K and $30 for kids' races) will be offered at Village Runner on Friday, June 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday morning from 6:00 to 7:00 a.m.

The race is sponsored by Manhattan Beach Confidential and DigMB.
