Summer Movie Nights Begin with 'Finding Dory'

Jun 13, 2017 02:45PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
It's time to kick off the summer with a loveable but forgetful blue tang and her friends: "Finding Dory" will be the first free summer outdoor movie in Manhattan Beach on June 16.

The movie will be shown in the grassy courtyard of the Manhattan Beach Library. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. with music, followed by a raffle with prizes from local businesses at 6:30 p.m., and the movie at 7:00 p.m.

The movie is sponsored by the City of Manhattan Beach Department of Parks and Recreation and Nikau Kai Waterman Shop and Cafe, along with Trilogy Spa, Bacchus Wines, Tabula Rasa, Summer Orthodontics, Bella Beach Kids, and Gelato Lounge.

All ages are welcome. Attendees are encouraged to bring beach chairs and blankets, along with money for raffle tickets, food, drink, and other activities. All proceeds will benefit the Mira Costa Surf Team.

The light-hearted animated film tells the story of Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), who suddenly remembers she has a family who may be looking for her. Dory, Marlin (Albert Brooks), and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) take off on a life-changing quest to find them with help from Hank, a cantankerous octopus; Bailey, a beluga whale who’s convinced his biological sonar skills are on the fritz; and Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark.

Manhattan Beach's popular outdoor movie series began in 2014 when organizer Jason Shanks of Nikau Kai worked with the City of Manhattan Beach and the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business and Professionals' Association to create a "hometown" event that would "fit the bill for a few of our lazy summer nights."

The next movie in the series will be "The Princess Bride" on Friday, July 21.
