Free Screenings and Exercise Classes for Older Adults

May 30, 2017 03:06PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
In celebration of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, the nation’s largest health event for older adults, the Center for Health & Fitness at Beach Cities Health District will offer free health assessments, fitness classes, and educational lectures to residents of Manhattan, Hermosa, and Redondo Beach this week.

“National Senior Health & Fitness Day is an opportunity for the Center for Health & Fitness to serve community members who are looking to improve their health and well-being,” said Cindy Foster, CHF general manager. “We’ve pulled together an array of health assessments, classes, lectures and highly respected physicians to facilitate discussions on leading health topics. I highly recommend older adults in the Beach Cities take advantage of these resources.”

CHF will offer a variety of free preventive care resources to the public, including osteoporosis and thyroid screenings. The assessments will be led by medical experts from UCLA Health, SCAN Health Plan, Health Care Partners, Positive Energy Physical Therapy, Aim Sports Medicine, and BCHD. All sessions take place May 30 through June 2 at the Center for Health & Fitness at 514 N. Prospect Ave., Redondo Beach (2nd floor).

Some of the free exercise classes offered include therapeutic yoga and tai chi, as well as many additional classes focused on older adult needs like balance, flexibility and movement. Classes and discussions are designed to help participants engage in cardio for improved health, manage joint and neck pain, learn fundamental nutrition habits for improved energy, explore Medicare benefits and more.

Pre-registration for the fitness classes, health assessments and lectures is required. Participants can sign up in person at the CHF front desk on the second floor of the Health District or by calling (310) 374-3426, ext. 147.  For a complete schedule of events, visit beachcitiesgym.org.

With more than 25 active members aged 90 or older, CHF offers medically-based programming for older adults and is an official host site of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, which is observed annually on the last Wednesday in May.
