Skechers Friendship Walk Aims for $1.5M Goal

Oct 14, 2016 12:36PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Could walking 3.5 miles change a child's life? The answer is yes, if it's the SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, to be held on Sunday, October 23.

The 8th annual fundraising walk - which runs from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back - raises money for children with special needs, and for local schools' education foundations. The walk begins at 9:00 a.m. (festivities starting at 8:00 a.m.), traveling from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back, for a total of approximately 3.5 miles.

This year's fundraising goal is $1.5 million, and so far the effort has raised just under $1.3 million.

The walk is produced by SKECHERS USA and co-produced by The Friendship Circle, a local nonprofit organization that helps children with special needs through social and recreational activities at home, school, and in the community.

To walk, you must register for a $30 fee. You may then align yourself with a team that is raising money for a specific school or foundation. Walkers collect pledges to raise additional funds for the cause they are supporting.

The walk itself is a celebratory event that has the feel of a parade, block party, and festival. Sports stars and other celebrities will kick off the morning's festivities with a group warm-up. Along the walk, expect to hear performances from local school marching bands, and get ready to give a high-five to Fresh Brothers' mascot Slice.

Walkers who sign up to join the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF) team will be entered in a giveaway for prizes including dinners for two at The Strand House, Brewco, Rock'n Fish, and Rock & Brews; a one-night stay at Shade Hotel; two free tickets to the Manhattan Wine Auction; a $25 Amazon gift card, and more.

This year the "Steel Sports Selfie" challenge returns as well: For any selfie you take between 8:00 a.m. on October 23 through 8:00 a.m. on October 24, posted with the hashtag #P2PSteelSports, Steel Sports will donate $5 to the walk.

The walk, billed as the biggest fundraising event in California, was created in 2010 by the Greenberg family, the founding family of SKECHERS. Last year's walk raised a record $1.4 million.

The event will be immediately followed by the 26th Annual Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Race beginning at noon.
