'Maze Runner' Author to Speak at Mira Costa

Sep 08, 2016 10:35PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
You've read his books, you've seen his movies...Now you have a chance to meet "Maze Runner" author James Dashner in person.

Dashner will speak on September 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Mira Costa High School auditorium. He will speak about "The Fever Code," the fifth and latest book in the Maze Runner series. Audience members will have the opportunity to meet him one-on-one when he signs books immediately following his presentation.

Dashner's appearance is sponsored by the Manhattan Beach Unified School District and the Mira Costa Library, in partnership with local bookstore Mysterious Galaxy (and Creating Conversations, the bookstore's outside events business, which brings authors to Southern California).

The event is free and open to both children and adults; however, reservations are recommended. Those who pre-order a book to purchase (the book will officially be released on September 27) will receive a priority number in line to have the book signed by Dashner.

Hildy Stern of Mysterious Galaxy/Creating Conversations said that she has been working with MBUSD Superintendent Mike Matthews, Mira Costa librarian Bridget Sullivan, and the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF) to find "engaging and creative ways to enrich the district families and students beyond the classroom."

"This is an ideal opportunity to bring a program with general, broad interest to the district's families," said Stern. "It has all the elements to be a perfect fit for the district: an author with an almost celebrity-like status, a book series widely read by the students, a popular movie series, and the opportunity for our district to promote reading and a love of literature through a successful and respected author."

Stern also noted that the lead actor in the movie series was a recent Mira Costa graduate.

In a previous collaboration, Mysterious Galaxy/Creating Conversation partnered with MBEF to host New York Times bestselling author Frank Bruni to speak about his book, "Where You Go Is Not Who You Will Be." The book addresses the college application process, a subject directly applicable to one of MBEF's grants

"Being a part of the opportunity to expose the district's families to these authors and watching as the students attend with interest and excitement is quite a remarkable experience," said Stern. "We are excited about sharing this opportunity again with the district."
