Celebrate life at the beach - and take part in some of the South Bay's oldest traditions - by participating in a range of activities at the International Surf Festival, to be held August 4 through 7.

The Surf Festival is comprised of three signature events: the Judge Taplin Lifeguard Medley Relay, the Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim, and the Charley Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament. Other  activities include a surfing contest, bodysurfing contest, beach run, paddleboard races, dory race, sand castle design contest, and youth events.

The Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament is the premier 6-man beach volleyball tournament in Southern California. The tournament will be held on Thursday and Friday, August 4 and 5, and is expected to draw more than 50,000 spectators.

Registration is available through the City of Manhattan Beach for $400 per team.

The Dick Fitzgerald 2-Mile Beach Run will be held on Saturday, August 6 at 8:00 a.m. The race starts at the Hermosa Beach Pier, goes along the sandy (east) side of the lifeguard towers all the way to the Longfellow lifeguard tower, and then returns to the pier along the hard packed sand by the water. The course is challenging because of the soft sand on the first half of the race and the hard pack run on the return trip.

The race is conducted by the Mira Costa Track and Cross Country teams. All proceeds from the run go back to the team. Registration is $25.

The Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim is one of the most popular long distance swims in the U.S., with more than 1100 swimmers completing the two-mile race last year. This year's race will be held on Sunday, August 7.

Swimmers enter the water on the south side of the 10th Street lifeguard tower (south of the Hermosa Beach Pier), swim around the pier, parallel to shore, and then round the Manhattan Beach Pier and finish on the beach.

Registration is $50 for both the swimsuit division and the wetsuit division.

Note that those swimmers who did not complete the 2015 Pier-to-Pier Swim are required to pass a "check-out" test. Tests will be held at the Hermosa Beach Pier on July 23 and 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Not an athlete - or just looking for some good old-fashioned family fun? Bring out your best inspiration at the Sand Castle Design Contest on Sunday, August 7. Registration is free, but you must register on-site (starting at 7:30 a.m.) to compete.

The 55th Annual International Surf Festival is presented by BEACHSPORT.org, the Chambers of Commerce and Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles County Fire Department and Department of Beaches and Harbors. The event promotes the four South Bay beach cities, the world’s best lifeguard service, and physical fitness for thousands of participants. Participants range in age from 8 years old to the late 80’s.
