Parents took center stage last Saturday at the 10th annual Jeff Goodrich Parents' Soccer Classic, a tournament in support of the MBX Foundation and the Goodrich family.

The daylong tournament showcased a total of 12 parent teams from Manhattan Beach schools including American Martyrs School, Del Sol School, Grand View, Meadows, Manhattan Beach MIddle School, Mira Costa High School, Pacific, Pennekamp, and Robinson, as well as a Hermosa Beach team - all playing 7v7 games.

The 2016 champions were from Grand View Elementary, repeating their championship title from last year. Grand View battled Del Sol in the final game, which ended tied in regulation. The game went to extra time and penalty kicks where Grand View emerged victorious.

In addition to the soccer action, participants enjoyed food, drinks, a silent auction, and a lunchtime crossbar challenge benefiting Darfuri refugees through the Hermosa group iACT. iACT travels to Africa periodically to set up soccer programs for refugee boys and girls.

Players then ended the day with an after-party celebration at Grunions.

"It was a fantastic day of soccer," said tournament chairman Corey Baim. "We're thankful to all who made this tournament a great day for all involved."

This year's Gold sponsors included Hennessey's, Grunions, Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group (SMOG), Tin Roof Bistro, El Gringo, Grow, Barsha, Belkin, and Physiotherapy Associates. Silver sponsors included MB Confidential, Davis & Derosa Physical Therapy Inc., Pacific Physical Therapy, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), LA Galaxy Soccer Center, Prosum, Coastal Interactive, EP Wealth Advisors, Law Offices of Elina K. Larsen, Barshay Real Estate, Inc., South Bay Digs, Piper Design, Meet Up South Bay Soccer, IE Design + Communications, and MBX.

Proceeds from the tournament go to each school's sports programs, the Mira Costa soccer booster club, and the family of Jeff Goodrich. Goodrich was the founder of the tournament and a Manhattan Beach police officer, Realtor, husband, father of two daughters, soccer player and major soccer fan. After he passed away, the tournament continued on in his memory.

Each year the event grows and is considered to be the largest annual parents' sports tournament fundraiser for the Manhattan Beach schools, having raised several hundred thousand dollars over the years. Many players train throughout the year in anticipation of this tournament.

"The 2017 version should be even bigger than this year, so those who want to participate had better start training soon," said Baim.
