The Manhattan Beach Public Library at its opening.

The Manhattan Beach Library first opened its doors a year ago to great celebration, and the steel-and-glass structure has won widespread praise for its innovative design. Now the community is invited to celebrate its first full year, at a special gathering on Sunday, May 1.

The celebration will be held at the library from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Featured attractions the Mira Costa High School Chamber Orchestra at 2:00 p.m.; local drummer Jamie Wollam of Tears for Fears with special guests at 3:00 p.m.;  and the Community Art - Mobile Mural Lab.

There will also be a film screening by Teen Friends of the Library and free books for kids.

The library offers a number of new amenities, including a community meeting room, expanded collection of books and other materials and automated book sorting machine - the first of its kind in the County of Los Angeles public library system.

Last year, the County of Los Angeles received the 2015 BEST Project of the Year - Regional Building award for the Manhattan Beach Library, which was completed in May 2015. The library project - finished on schedule and under budget - represented a successful partnership between the City of Manhattan Beach and the County of Los Angeles.
