Barsha Team Opens 'The Souk'

Mar 28, 2016 06:52PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Step into The Souk, and you'll feel as if you were transported to another continent, surrounded by hand-crafted accessories and richly detailed embroidered fabrics. This Tunisian-themed shop, the latest venture of Barsha Wines' Adnen and Lenora Marouani, features products ranging from tagines (earthenware cooking dishes) to children's tunics.

The Souk, located at 1201 Manhattan Ave., had a "soft opening" last week, but will host a grand opening party on April 2 from noon to 4:00 p.m. The party will feature wine and small bites, along with 10 percent off everything in the shop.

Co-owner Adnen Marouani is a Tunisian native who has frequently featured his native specialties at Barsha, including the popular harissa and Tunisian spiced almonds. He says that the store was inspired by a recent family visit to Tunisia, traveling through the souks, or bazaars, that wind through narrow alleys.

Marouani says that about "90 percent" of the items featured in the store are from Tunisia, with occasional items from Turkey, Morocco, and elsewhere in the region. The store sells ceramics, rugs, chandeliers, jewelry, accessories, and children's clothing.

"We thought Manhattan Beach would enjoy a little Bohemian culture," he says with a grin.

Join The Souk on Saturday, April 2 from noon to 4:00 p.m. for light bites and wine as well as 10 percent off all merchandise. 1201 Manhattan Ave. in Manhattan Beach; phone 310-545-1016.
