It was a jam-packed weekend of badminton action, with some of the world's premier players of the sport meeting up at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club for the last round of matches to earn points toward qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The tournament winners were Indra Bagus Ade Chandra of Italy for the men's singles; Jeanine Cicognini of Italy for the women's singles; David Yedija Pohan and Ricky Alverino Sidharta of Indonesia for the men's doubles; Nicole Marquez and Adelina Quinones of Mexico for women's doubles; and David Yedija Pohan and Jenna Gozali of Indonesia for mixed doubles.

The 80-year-old Manhattan Beach Badminton Club proved to be a worthy venue for this top-tier tournament. The club, one of only a handful of its kind in the country, features courts built specifically for badminton. The club worked closely with the international badminton organizations and with the City of Manhattan Beach to provide a welcoming environment for the international athletes.

For those new fans of badminton whose interest was piqued from watching the tournament, the City of Manhattan Beach has partnered with the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club to offer Introduction to Badminton classes for both youth and adult. To sign up, visit the city's activity registration pages.
