Mira Costa cellists JD Damarillo and George Rochelle perform at the offices of Ignited USA in El Segundo.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Play a few good gigs! The Mira Costa High School orchestra and band concert ensembles have just launched a "Gigs4Carnegie" fundraiser in which they will perform at private events in exchange for donations to their upcoming trip to Carnegie Hall.

The five musical ensemble groups, totaling 260 students, have been invited to play a solo concert at the world-famous Carnegie Hall as part of the Distinguished Concerts International New York 2016 Concert Series. The groups will perform before an audience of approximately 1,500 people on May 29.

The young musicians are now focused on raising $65,000 to help get all 260 students and their instruments to New York. The groups recently held a community e-waste event at Mira Costa to raise money for the effort.

Two orchestra students, J.D. Damarillo and George Rochelle, recently presented the first "gig" at the offices of Ignited USA in El Segundo. Damarillo and Rochelle, both cellists, played classical duets for about an hour, including pieces by master composers Bach and Telemann, for a gathering of about 60 people. The pair was described as being very poised and professional.

The boys were proud to have earned the additional money for the trip, which their parents described as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play on one of the most prestigious stages in the world.”

Anyone interested in booking a “Gigs4Carnegie” experience can send an email to [email protected]. The music groups are also accepting online donations of any amount at their GoFundMe account: www.gofundme.com/qx36guw4.

The groups have currently raised just over $9,000 out of the $65,000 needed to pay for the trip.
