SKECHERS Friendship Walk Wants You

Oct 18, 2015 10:57AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Could walking 3.5 miles change someone's life? The answer is yes, if it's the SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, to be held on Sunday, October 25.

The 7th annual fundraising walk - which runs from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back - raises money for children with special needs, and for local schools' education foundations.

This year's fundraising goal is $1.2 million, and so far the effort has raised just over $1.1 million. The walk is produced by SKECHERS USA and co-produced by The Friendship Circle, a local nonprofit organization that helps children with special needs through social and recreational activities at home, school, and in the community.

To walk, you must register for a $25 fee. You may then align yourself with a team that is raising money for a specific school or foundation. Walkers collect pledges to raise additional funds for the cause they are supporting.

The walk itself is a celebratory event that has the feel of a parade, block party, and festival. Along the walk, expect to hear performances from local school marching bands, and get ready to give a high-five to Fresh Brothers' mascot Slice.

At the Manhattan Beach Pier there will be special appearances by players for the Clippers (including a special performance by the Clippers Dance Team), Dodgers, Angels, and Kings. Other attractions include a Kids Fun Zone, the LA Kings Ice Truck, the Nickelodeon Photo Booth, an Aerojet rocket building booth, and many giveaways galore.

Walkers who sign up to join the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF) team will be entered in a giveaway, with two registrants picked at random to receive dinner for two at The Strand House and a one night stay at Shade Hotel. Additionally, two MBUSD/MBEF participants will be picked at random to receive free tickets to the MBEF Wine Auction.

This year the "Steel Sports Selfie" challenge returns as well: For any selfie you take between 8:00 a.m. on October 25 through 8:00 a.m. on October 26, posted with the hashtag #P2PSteelSports, Steel Sports will donate $5 to the walk.

The Skechers Friendship Walk will be held on Sunday, October 25, beginning at the Manhattan Beach Pier at 9:00 a.m. (festivities begin at 8:00 a.m.). The event will be immediately followed by the 25th Annual World Famous Pumpkin Race, beginning at noon.
