Locals Take Home Top Honors for Manhattan Beach Photos

Aug 20, 2015 08:42AM ● By Mb News Staff

Two longtime Manhattan Beach residents who captured memorable moments in our city were named winners in the #‎MyCA33‬ photo contest staged by Congressman Ted Lieu earlier this summer.

Charlie Scholz and James Gill, who were both born in Manhattan Beach and continue to live here, were selected by Rep. Lieu and his staff from among numerous entries that spanned Lieu's district. Scholz, who frequently photographs beautiful South Bay scenes, took 2nd Place in the Facebook portion of the contest; Gill took 3rd Place for photos submitted via Twitter.

"My office received numerous entries, and I was thrilled to see all the amazing photos taken of our beautiful District!" said Lieu. "With so many entries, winners were selected by the way participants submitted their photos (via Instagram, Facebook, & Twitter)."

Scholz took his winning photos with a 15-30 Tamron lens he recently purchased, he told DigMB. "I have always been into photography," he said, "but as far as business, about 15 years," noted the Mira Costa High School graduate whose photos can be purchased online via his Facebook page for Charlie Scholz Photography. Scholz stays busy shooting landscapes, parties, and other bookings.

Gill, a third-generation MBer who lived in the city from birth to 1973 and returned in 1990, took his shot just after sunrise on Oct. 8, 2014, and "after someone had hosed off the pier to clean it." He first entered it in the I <3 MB contest, receiving an honorable mention. He was recently reappointed to the city's cultural arts commission for a second term.

Congratulations to all the winners of this year's #MyCA33 photo competition!
