More than 100 runners pounded the sand this morning at the Dick Fitzgerald 2-Mile Sand Run, which stretched from the Hermosa Beach Pier to the Longfellow lifeguard tower and back again. All proceeds supported the Mira Costa High School Cross Country team.

Fittingly, Mira Costa runner Xavier Court came in first with a time of 12:47. He was closely followed by teammates Ethan Williams, Scott Healy, and Andrew Costley. Leading the Mira Costa women were Gaby Guererro, Sofia Vialpando, and Amanda Han.

Runners call this particular beach run very challenging because of the soft sand on the first half of the race and the hard pack run on the return trip. Village Runner offered sand socks to runners who did not want to wear running shoes but were not comfortable running barefoot.

The event is one of many beach-related sports challenges during the International Surf Festival weekend, held this weekend in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and Torrance. It is named after former Director of the Department of Beaches Dick Fitzgerald, who helped start the International Surf Festival.
