As the Charlie Saikley 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament inches back to its weekend roots, you never know what (or who) you might discover on the sand south of the Manhattan Beach Pier, either hanging out or playing in the legendary tournament.

On the first day of the 2015 installment, pro volleyball player Casey Jennings held forth on Team Fletch and a Stack, joined by former NBA pro Luke Walton and "The Voice" Chris "Geeter" McGee, former AVP pro and current AVP spokesperson.

Indeed, perhaps the only thing that can be said about the tournament, which began in 1962, is that you can expect the unexpected.

This year, former Los Angeles Lakers player Steve Nash has joined the ranks of pro athletes who find their way to the tournament. Those storied athletes include Eric Fonoimoana, Casey Patterson, Brent Frohoff, Jim Arico, and Peter Tourigny, and have included Former NFL pro Matt Leinart, and NBA pros Kevin Love and Richard Jefferson.

And while the air of celebrity wafts through the tourney, the down-to-earth vibe and fun, competitive spirit is the pervasive element.

In the first day of competition, Sandpipers defeated a team representing El Sombrero to take the Women's Masters division title.

Competition today (Friday, July 31) will feature teams that have made it into the playoffs. Those include Team Fletch and a Stack, which has gone by different names in its 20-year history and whose players frequently wear variations of the outfit Chevy Chase wore in the 1985 movie "Fletch," essentially a Lakers jersey, shorts, and a black Afro-like wig.

Other teams playing today include Men's Open defending champions 12th Street/The Deck, 2013 and 2011 champs
Simmzy's/Beckers Bakery, and Men's Masters defending champs Good Stuff, who, like Team Fletch, are known for adding some fun to the tourney, blasting“We Are Family” out of a portable radio during timeouts.

The Charlie Saikley 6-Man tournament holds forth today on the sand south of the MB Pier.
