For the first time in its 55-year history, the fabled Charlie Saikley 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament is offering a Junior 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament for players 18 and under. The Jr. version will be held on Sunday, Aug. 2 beginning at 9 a.m. on the sand just south of Manhattan Beach Pier.
The Saikley 6-Man, one of beach volleyball's premier events, draws players from throughout the nation, who play in costumes. The Jr. event promises to be equally exciting, as its players can play co-ed and wear costumes.
"The Junior 6-Man provides youth who play on the beach or indoors an opportunity to get together, dress up, and have fun while doing something they love and, generally speaking, boys don’t get to play with girls, so, Jr. 6-Man is a fun way for boys and girls to play together on one team and compete against their friends," says Jessica Vincent, recreation services manager for the City of Manhattan Beach Parks & Recreation Department.
"It’s also preparing teams to play against the best of the best in the iconic Charlie Saikley 6-Man (in future years)," she noted. "Charlie believed in youth, and to continue his legacy and passion for the sport of beach volleyball, working with his son, J. Saikley, we created the Jr. 6-Man."
