Manhattan Beach Yacht Club Now A Destination for Grilled Cheese Creations

Jul 03, 2015 04:27PM ● By Mb News Staff
If the theme is grilled cheese, you've probably already got a winner. Who can resist its gooey deliciousness, the melted cheddar oozing out between two slices of toasted bread?

Up the taste ante and add some fun culinary finesse and you've got the new grilled cheese sandwich menu at Manhattan Beach Yacht Club by Two Guns Espresso, where sandwich and cheese lovers are getting a new experience.

"We really want to become known as the place to get a grilled cheese in the South Bay," Manager Ted Brown told DigMB, "so we went to a lot of trouble to come up with some delicious and interesting combinations. As is our custom, we held a small tasting party and spent an afternoon perfecting the recipes with our chef Jennifer. When everyone was happy, we created the menu!"

There's nothing more scenic nor delicious as a Manhattan Mushroom Grilled Cheese Sandwich and a Flat White from the Manhattan Beach Yacht Club on the MB Pier.

Bam! Now you can order the Breakfast Melt (bacon, scrambled eggs, and gouda), the Ultimate Mac N' Cheese (macaroni and cheese with tomato pesto grilled on ciabatta), the Extreme Cheese (fontina, brie, and gouda), the Italian (tomato pesto, mozzarella cheese, and roasted red peppers), and the Manhattan Mushroom (portobello mushroom with brie on multigrain). Add-ons include avocado and ham.

While multigrain and ciabatta are the two choices for sandwich breads, you can order your own custom grilled cheese creation using any of the available ingredients, says Brown, who notes that fontina is great added to the Manhattan Mushroom.

The Breakfast Melt is available from 8 a.m. when MBYC opens until 3 p.m. The other grilled cheese sandwiches are available from 10 a.m. til 3 p.m.

MBYC, which opened last September (and is "yacht club" in name only), has gradually added all sorts of items to the famous coffee and tea drinks their original location (
Two Guns Espresso, which is still open, of course!) is known for. Those beverages include an authentic  Flat White, lattes, cappuccinos, the Frozen Bullet, cold brew iced coffee, and coffee milk. Recent additions include bagels and cream cheese.

As has always been the case at Two Guns, MBYC can also be counted on for interesting additions to the menu.

Says Brown, "We’re going to introduce the limeade quencher which we do at the downtown (Los Angeles) store, COGO limeade and White Tip Jasmine Tea--It's like the best Arnold Palmer you've ever had!"

MBYC occupies a small space next to Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium atop the MB Pier. Says Brown, "I’m not always out there, but I love being able to look out and see the ocean, seals, pelicans, sharks, even the occasional whale. And I really enjoy meeting people from all over the world who are thrilled to find great espresso at the end of the pier."

Two Guns Owners Andrew "Stan" Stanisch and Craig Oram are from New Zealand (Brown is, too) and brought the Australasian Flat White to the South Bay at Two Guns in MB in 2011, acquiring a huge following. Luke Walton and Jimmy Kimmel are among a few of the celebrities known to stop in.

When the opportunity to take over the pier location came up, Stanisch and Oram jumped on it, bringing Brown into the fold.

Though customers have to walk out to the end of the pier, Brown happily reports that "we have a growing number of MB locals enjoying their amazing pier (the best in SoCal) with our delicious coffee every day!

"I think we’re unique," says Brown. "People are always surprised to find us and even more surprised when they try us!"
