Sign Up for Summer Solstice Races in Manhattan Beach

The wet-sand race, held to coincide with the Summer Solstice on a day when tides are at their lowest, will be run this year on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 7:30 a.m. All the morning's races start and finish under the Manhattan Beach Pier.
The MB5K is sponsored by Manhattan Beach Confidential and DigMB.com.
Runners, walkers and crawlers all have their own age- and skill-appropriate races. The main 5K run/walk, open to all ages, begins at 7:30 a.m. and is held along the sandy shoreline on the flat, wet sand, where runners say they get extra energy from the nearby ocean. It's certainly a unique type of race.
The "Kids Dash 1K" for ages 7-12 takes place at 8:20 a.m.; the "Little Kids 400m" for ages 3-6 at 8:25 a.m., and the "Crawlers 50m" for ages 2 and under is held at 8:25 a.m.
"The super low tide creates a perfect running surface of hard packed sand like a dirt road so running with or without shoes is an option (the faster athletes tend to wear shoes)," said Jeff Atkinson, race organizer and former Olympic athlete.
"One can even wear track spikes! Baby joggers work great and are encouraged as the kids love being that close to the sea."
Pre-registered runners are guaranteed a T-shirt, and the Top 5 in each of the 28 age divisions receive the World Famous Cookie Medals.
Online registration is available now. The MB 5K is $35 per participant; the Kids Dash 1K is $25. The Little Kids and Crawlers races are free. Late registration and packet pick-up is set for Friday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Village Runner, 1840 Sepulveda Blvd., Manhattan Beach. Race day registration will be available from 6 to 7 a.m. at $40 per 5K entrant, and $30 per Kids Dash runner.
