Manhattan Beach will be off to the races for Kentucky Derby Day, with a May 2 party at Shade Hotel to celebrate the iconic horse race. The party will be held from noon to 3:30 p.m, in the terrace and lounge, with guests encouraged to wear their fanciest hats and derby wear.

On the menu are Hudson Whiskey Mint Juleps, Hendrick's Derby-Inspired cocktails, and small plates. Entertainment will include contests for guests, a broadcast of the pre-race festivities, and of course the official race itself, which starts at 3:24 p.m.

May 2 marks the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby. Each year 20 horses have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to participate in the race. To earn a spot in the starting gate, they must travel along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, a series of 35 designated races at tracks across the country and around the world. Points are awarded to the top four finishers in each race; the 20 horses with the most points earn the chance to race at Churchill Downs.
