"Thoroughly Modern Millie" On Stage at Mira Costa

Apr 22, 2015 09:36PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Looking for some big-city style entertainment? "Thoroughly Modern Millie," the story of a small-town girl who makes a move to the Big Apple in the Roaring 20's, opens this weekend at Mira Costa High School.  The first performance of the high school's spring musical will take place on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m.

The Mira Costa production is already an award-winner: The drama department took the top prize in Musical Theater last month at the Fullerton College High School Theater Festival with a selection of scenes from the musical. At the same competition, the department also beat out 50 other high schools to win the grand prize Sweepstakes Award for the third year in a row.

The music also promises to be a major draw. With 38 instrumentalists from the band and orchestra programs, "Millie" features the largest pit orchestra a Mira Costa production has seen.

"Understanding and performing 1920's jazz in a full orchestra setting is a unique and challenging opportunity for our students. There are few musical experiences like playing in a Broadway-style pit orchestra," said orchestra director Mark McCormick.

Performances of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" will continue on Saturday, April 25 at 7:30pm; Wednesday, April 29 at 4:00pm; Thursday, April 30 at 6:30pm; Friday, May 1 at 7:30pm; Saturday, May 2 at 2pm (matinee performance); and Saturday, May 2 at 7:30pm.

Discounted pre-sale tickets are available online for $16 (adults) and $11 (students and seniors) through April 24. Tickets are also available at Dietz Brothers Music, Tiffany Cleaners, and Patterson Cleaners. At the box office, tickets will be $18 for adults and $12 for students/seniors. For the Wednesday performance only, tickets will be $5 for students with ID.
