GrowingGreat Docents to Be Honored at MB Farmers Market

Apr 20, 2015 08:24PM ● By Mb News Staff

GrowingGreat counts on hardworking volunteers to help support its efforts.

The Manhattan Beach Farmers Market will celebrate Earth Day Tuesday, April 21 by recognizing docents with GrowingGreat who teach and introduce the nonprofit's lessons plans to students attending elementary school in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.

Docents will be recognized by MB Mayor Wayne Powell when the market opens at 11 a.m. Information on how we all can create a #sustainableMB will also be available from city staff. Stop by the city's booth to receive a #sustainableMB gift. GrowingGreat provides nutrition information and garden education to youngsters in California, Nevada, and New York.

GrowingGreat has unique ties to Manhattan Beach. Its program began in MB in 1999 by Marika Bergsund who in 2001 used a $50,000 grant from the California Department of Education to expand the program from a garden at one MB elementary school to include gardens at all five, as well as a Farm-to-School Harvest of the Month tasting program. In 2002, Bergsund recruited Peggy Curry, a renowned local nutrition educator and MB resident, Lori Sherman, who co-authored the Classroom Nutrition program curriculum and training modules, and Chris Weller to join forces to expand the GrowingGreat program to provide more direct nutrition education beyond garden lessons.

The Farmers Market is located on the back side of Metlox Plaza (13th street, between Valley and Morningside drives) in Downtown Manhattan Beach.
