Lady Mustangs Go For CIF State Championship

Mar 11, 2015 08:45AM ● By Mb News Staff
Undefeated at home, the Mira Costa High School girls basketball team will take on the Westview Wolverines tonight (Wednesday, March 11) at 7 p.m. during its first game in the 2015 CIF State Girls Basketball Championships tournament.

The Lady Mustangs are the No. 3 seed in the single-elimination tournament, which brings together the top 16 teams in the southern half of California.

"We have had a great season, the best in the past several years," said Coach John Lapham. "Despite playing a very difficult schedule, we have gone 24-7, and beaten a number of very highly ranked teams. We lost in the CIF finals on Saturday (to Redondo Union High School) but are proud to have made it there two years in a row." Only the top teams from that tournament were invited to compete in the state championships.

The Wolverines, ranked 14th in the tourney, have 21 wins and 7 losses to their name, with a 7-3 record on the road.

A win tonight could put the Mustangs on track to play RUHS, in what would be another heated contest. Though the Mustangs have lost twice to Redondo this season, they also handed the league champion Seahawks their only league loss, beating them 42-36 the first time the two highly rated teams played each other. Subsequent games have gone to Redondo, 40-39 for the league championship and 60-37 last Saturday in the CIF finals tournament.

Redondo hosts San Pedro High School at 6 p.m. tonight. A re-match between MCHS and RUHS would take both teams winning their first two games in the CIF State tournament that begins tonight.

If the Mustangs win tonight, they play at home Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Mustangs are led by senior point guard Keilani Ikehara and sophomore forward Allie Navarette. Other key players include seniors Patience Taylor, Haley Tojo, and Devon Feaster, along with sophomores Halle Maeda,
Laura Sheckter and Alexa Underwood.

Admission to tournament games are $9 for general admission and $5 for children, students with an ASB card and senior citizens.
