Tour de Pier Registration Opens

Jan 27, 2015 10:16AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
It's time to reserve a bike, round up a group of friends, and get ready to "Ride in Place - Move Charity Forward." That's the motto of the popular Tour de Pier, the annual cancer fundraising event that opened for registration this week. The May 17 event, which features stationary cycling at the Manhattan Beach Pier, is now in its third year and is aiming to raise $750,000.

"It is easy to be passionate about The Tour de Pier - it combines raising money for a worthy cause and spinning with the ocean as our backdrop," said Angela Bennett, co-owner of Fit On Studios, one of the presenting sponsors of the event. "It has become one of my favorite days of the year,
and just when you thought it could not get any better... we will surprise you!"

The Tour de Pier gives participants the opportunity to ride a stationary bike over four 50-minute sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the fundraiser. The fundraising minimum for each bike is $500; most participants ride in teams of four so that each rider does one session.

The event benefits the Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach, the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and the Uncle Kory Foundation. Event founders Jon Hirshberg and Heath Gregory are both leaders in their respective foundations benefiting cancer research.

Celebrity participants include professional race car driver Townsend Bell, professional bike racer Jeff Louder, Olympic water polo gold medalist Heather Petri, professional soccer player Alexi Lalas, Ironman champion Craig Hummer, Olympic cyclist Tony Cruz, professional cyclist Ted Ernst, Olympic volleyball gold medalist Eric Fonoimoana, and Olympic volleyball gold medalist Kerri Walsh.

Last year's event boasted 905 participants from 12 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. A total of 227 separate teams raised over $540,000. This year's event is expected to surpass those numbers. More information about Tour de Pier registration is available here.
