A surfer competes in a South Bay Boardriders event.

The South Bay Boardriders Club's Surf Series Contest #1 set for Saturday, Jan. 3 in Manhattan Beach has been postponed "due to Mother Ocean not providing swell and contestable conditions," according to a post on the group's Facebook page.

The postponement is the second one for the initial contest in the 2014-2015 series. Rainfall moved the original December 13 date to January 3, and now event organizers will again re-schedule the event.

Entry categories in the surf contest are:
  • Micro Groms (9 & under)
  • Assisted Micro Groms (9 & under)
  • Groms (12 & under)
  • Boys (14 & under)
  • Juniors (18 & under)
  • Open Men (all ages)
  • Masters (40-49)
  • Legends (50+)
  • Open Longboard (all ages)
  • Junior Women (18 & under)
  • Open Women (all ages)
All contestants receive t-shirts and other goodies for entering; Finalists from all divisions win prizes. The Surf Series offers ratings winners prizes that include free trips, surfboards, wetsuits and more.

The Boardriders Club's upcoming 2015 contests are scheduled for January 24, February 28, March 28 and April 25. Each event is sponsored by a local surf/ocean shop. The January 24 contest is the second in the series.

Surf Series contests are open to all and South Bay Boardriders Club members receive a discount on the entry fee. Student, individual and family club memberships are available. In addition to discounted contest entry fees, membership includes discounts at local surf shops, member pricing on club apparel and accessories, free admission to general membership meetings and special events, and a priority invitation to the group's South Bay Big Wave Challenge awards night.

South Bay Boardriders was launched in November 2009  and is "dedicated to celebrating the rich history of the South Bay surfing culture, introducing families, youth, and our community to all aspects of ocean activities, and being guardians of our local shoreline. 'Fun' is central to who we are.

The group's founding board members are Mike Balzer, Derek Levy, Tom Horton, Kim Komick, George Loren, Matt Walls, Tim Ritter, Kevin Campbell, Dickie O’Reilly, and Kelly Zaun.
